Abstract:
Methanogenic archaea are widely distributed in anoxic environments and are the key functional micro-organisms in the process of anaerobic degradation of organic matter. They play a very important role in the global carbon cycle and climate change. Traditionally, methanogenic archaea are believed to only distribute in the phylum of Euryarchaeota, however, a series of non-Euryarchaeota methanogenic archaea have been found in the latest researches. It is speculated that the new archaea not only have methanogenic ability, but also have the metabolic ability of fermenting complex organic matter. This review focuses on methanogens of the archaeal phylum Verstraetearchaeota, summarizes research progresses of its systematic taxonomy, carbon metabolism and ecological distributions, and anticipates the trends of future research directions.
