Abstract:
Wheat straw fiber is one of the most abundant natural fibers that can be used effectively in thermoplastic composites. The dispersion of fibers in composites is an important factor affecting the corresponding mechanical properties. There have been a few studies involving statistical approaches for description of fiber dispersion in composites. Based on statistical distribution rule of fiber size, random algorithm is used to stimulate dispersion of fibers in composites. Three indexes are constructed to describe the dispersion of fibers, namely, fiber dispersion properties, single fiber and contacted fiber. The effects of fiber content and fiber size to dispersion are counted and analyzed. The results show that when fiber content increases, the number of single fiber increases, but the increment of single fiber decreases. The decrease law accords with cubic function. The number of fiber contact increases with fiber content, which conforms to quadratic function. The fiber size affects single fiber number and contacted fiber increasing amplitude, but does not affect the percentage of single fiber. The dispersion decreases linearly with the increase of fiber content. Quantitative description of fiber dispersion provides quantitative indicators for further composite performance analysis and modeling.
